Maintaining Fat Loss
Consistency is Key! For some people, weight loss just isn't worth the effort. They seem to regain every pound they lose. New research reveals what an individual needs to do to successfully lose weight and maintain the loss. It just isn't that easy. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center have compiled a National Weight Control Registry of people who successfully lost weight and kept it off.
So far the experts have analyzed a detailed questionnaire from 629 women and 155 men who lost an average of 66 pounds and maintained at least a 30-lb. weight loss for 5 1/2 years. Most of those people managed to keep their weight off by burning an average of 2,800 calories a week with exercise. That means burning off about 400 calories daily. (The average person uses about 100 calories every mile he or she walks or runs.) These folks also limit their intake of high-fat, high-calorie foods.
James Hill, co-founder of the weight control registry and an obesity expert with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, says in USA Today that people shouldn't be discouraged by these findings. If they would forget about weight and concentrate on eating right and exercising at least 30 minutes a day, then the weight would come off.
