A Big Mistake
-------------
Everyone cheats on their diet. It's a simple fact of life.
Human will power wanes when we get hungry and it's very
common for a dieter to go on an all-day splurge every once
in awhile.
But what most people do to "make up" for a calorie splurge
may actually be worse than the splurge itself. If you starve
yourself for a couple of days in order to make up for a high
calorie day, you're making a big -- no gigantic -- mistake.
Eating few or no calories for even a single day will slow
down your metabolism, greatly increase junk food cravings,
and cause your body to store almost every calorie you eat
the next day as fat!
Drastically cutting calories makes your body think it's
starving or about to starve, so it holds onto every ounce of
fat it can, burns muscle tissue for energy, and slows its
metabolism for survival. Obviously "Starvation Mode" is the
LAST place you want to be when you're trying to lose weight.
The best thing you can do when you mess up is to just get
back into your usual diet and exercise routine as soon as
you can!
The Bottom Line: When you cheat on your diet, don't try to
make up for it by starving yourself the next day. You'll
only make it much, much worse. If you do anything, do a
little bit more exercise the next day...but not THAT much
more!
Also, remember that an occasional cheat day can actually be
a good thing, especially if you've been on a strict diet for
awhile.
